Tis’ the season and everywhere you look there are colored lights, hanging ornaments and of course Christmas music! Every website it seems wants to give you their top ten list for everything from hot kids toys to cheap gifts that look good. We didn’t want to miss the boat, so here is our own top ten list of Christmas gift ideas for seniors…
10) Lighted Slippers - You may be thinking “Oh, this sounds cheesy” but they are really neat. You don’t have to be elderly to appreciate the functionality of this item. Perfect for when you don’t want to turn every light on in your house for late night trips to the bathroom or to the kitchen for a snack.
9) Personalized Pet Print – Who is always there for that elderly loved one? Faithful Fluffy or Fido of course! Honor that bond by purchasing a personalized cat print or a personalized dog print. This item will include the pet’s name, the breed (you can choose mixed if breed unknown) and the owner’s name. There is even a picture slot for you to insert your own picture of your furry friend. Best of all, buy a gift you will feel good about! All proceeds from the sale of this product are donated to our local SPCA.
8) Lap Desk – Ever wish you could sit in bed or in that comfy chair in the den and get stuff done that you would otherwise have to sit at a table or desk for, I bet grandma or grandpa do! Well now they can with the help of a bean bag lap desk. The bottom is soft and won’t hurt legs, while the top is sturdy. The uses are endless, from writing out bills to holding that glass of milk and some cookies all from the comfort of that special spot.
7) Fun & Games - Large piece puzzles and low vision playing cards make great gifts that can be used alone or in groups. Ask yourself, does grandma or grandpa have a hobby? Do they like to go to the casino? If so maybe they would like a big screen handheld poker game. Church bingo more their style? Try out a talking bingo machine that calls out the numbers and comes with its own bingo cards.
6) Big Button Photo Phone - Does a large distance separate you from your loved one? Then shorten that distance with a new phone! This phone is great for seniors with large buttons that make dialing easier and features a speed dial with pictures to remind them who really is #1.
5) Personalized Poems – Much like our other personalized print, this item can be made specifically for your grandmother or grandfather. Pick out the poem you like the best, fill in the title, their special name and a personal message from you at the bottom. It shows that you care enough to take the time to have something special made especially for them. Besides, how many other grandma’s can say they have their own poem made for just for them!
4) Gift Certificates - Though these may seem impersonal, they are practical gifts. They do not need to be for a fancy department store or a trendy boutique, but rather get one for a local grocery store or drug store. These stores always contain items we all need. Want to pamper Grandma? Giver her a gift certificate for a spa treatment or pedicure! Grandpa love good food? How about credit at the local butcher shop!
3) Grandma or Grandpa themed Christmas Gift Basket - These gift boxes come packed to the max! Some Christmas themed gifts and grandma/grandpa themed gifts make up the contents. Not sure what to get? Get a little of everything!
2) Memory Books - Ever wonder what it was like for your grandparents growing up? Now you can have all your questions answered (and some you never would have thought to ask) with the gift of a memory book. This is two gifts in one! You give them the gift of remembering great memories and showing you care, and you get to keep these memories forever and pass them down for generations to come.
1) Time & Attention – We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again, a gift though well meaning is no substitute for your time and attention. This holiday season take the time to either visit, call or write those special older loved ones in your family.
