Buying a game for an older adult is a great gift idea. However, keep in mind a few things before making that decision:

1) Are they able to still see to play? If the game is not a low vision game, will they be able to read the instrcutions, and see the pieces or read the cards?

2) Do they like to play games? Some people are really not into playing games- they prefer different activities like gardening or being outside or reading. Think about their interests before shopping.

3) Does the senior prefer to play a game with someone or alone? Again, personality can be a big factor. makre sure they enjoy the social interaction. If they are more of a loner type, find some games that can be done alone, like a big button solitaire game for seniors.

4) How is their memory? If they have cognitive issues, consider buying a game that is non competitie, or is more a a conversational game with no real winner. It will still be entertaining, but will challenge seniors’ brains to keep their memories sharper.

Need more ideas- please see the game ideas for older adults here.

Perhaps you know a senior who’s sitting and watching TV just a bit too much. Studies have proven that it’s vital for seniors to keep their brains active, or the brain cells start to degenerate. Games can often be the entertaining solution to keeping the brain active as well as keeping the senior busy and feeling included.

Here is a list of our favorite games for senior citizens, based on our research and experience with older adults.

1) Reminiscing Game- encourages older adults to answer trivia questions about all subjects for several deacdes from the 40′s on. Useful intergenerational game and is great for seniors to dazzle younge players that haven’t had all the life experiences that the younger players have had.

2) Handheld Solitaire with Bigger Buttons- This is a great game for a senior that lives alone and loves solitaire, but needs a slightly larger screen or buttons to play.

3) 1940′s Activity Book- This book is an interactive q and a trivia book full of puzzles, questions and discussions from the 40′s. Can be used in a group or alone.

4) Low Vision Cards- If the senior citizen enjoys just playing cards with a group of other seniors, then low vision playing cards with larger than average sized numbers and suits are very useful.

Hope these tips are useful- feel free to post your own favorite senior games.

Don’t forget older fathers on Father’s Day. Here are a few quick tips for last minute Father’s Day gifts for older men.

1)Are they a grandpa? Consider a grandpa themed gift like a grandpa hat, or a grandpa tshirt.

2) Do they have a favorite snack? If they are like my Dad, he’s happy with a forbidden bag of his favorite potato chips and a six pack of his favorite beer- things my mom doesn’t normally let him buy on a regular basis.

3) Is he a practical elderly man? You might try purchasing a lap desk that can be used to hold his favorite books, or games, or trays.

Still stuck?

Today is an exceptionally cool fall day. Hard to believe it is getting dark so fast. Seniors especially have a hard time seeing in less light. Darkness can aggravate a low vision problem. Here at Seniorstore.com, we specialize in low vision products and gifts for the visually impaired, like low vision games, large print calendars and large print address books. Consider what you can do to help the senior with low ligthing issues- perhaps an extra lamp or two or magnifier? Seniors with macular degeneration will realy appreciate your assistance.

I had a thought today about grandfathers and all the changes they have seen. My father, who is in his 70′s, has truly enjoyed being a grandfather, perhaps even more than being a father. He says the pressure is off to provide for a family, and you can just sit and enjoy the little ones like you weren’t able to before. Have any of you ever experienced this same feeling? If so, please post about your experiences. The role of men has chnaged so my=uch the last forty years, that I can’t help buth think that the role of grandpas has also changed. They seem more involved in the grandchildren’s lives than ever before. At Seniorstore.com, we cre about try to honor grandpa with the best grandpa gifts out there. Consider buying one for your special grandpa today.
